ISA Speedsurfing Grand Prix Karpathos 2006 - Day 1

The first Karpathian Speedsurfing Grand Prix saw a perfect kickoff yesterday with four divisions racing for the victory. In the end, Bjorn Dunkerbeck (AND, North) got the bullet in front of Finian Maynard (BVI, F2) and Patrik Diethelm (ITA, F2, North). The womens fleet is lead by Karin Jaggi (SUI, F2, North) who was able to leave Marion Raisi (FRA, Exocet) and Nicoletta Margoni (GRE, F2) behind.

The racing area, directly situated in the Devils Bay on Karpathos, surprised the competitors from the 16 participating countries with winds around 6 beaufort and perfectly flat water, which already allowed for speeds closely reaching 40 knots. As the wind will pick up during the next days, spectacular action is expected.

The night before the first racing day the competiors were welcomed on the island of Karpathos with a great open air reception, combining traditional music and dance with modern parts and fantastic fireworks.

Racing continues until the 31st of August, with the fleet split into gold and silver again to allow for another two rounds today.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

ISA Speedsurfing Grand Prix Karpathos 2006 - Day 2

Racing continued today with a complete second leg and the first half of the third leg. Bjorn Dunkerbeck (AND, North) and Karin Jaggi (SUI, F2, North) both shot their second bullet and are leading the competition clearly.

Second ranked in the mens fleet is F2-shaper Patrik Diethelm (ITA, F2, North) in Front of his teammate Finian Maynard (BVI, F2). Both have equal points but Patrik was able to squeeze out around 0,2 of a knot more out of the conditions then Finian.

Karin Jaggi was also able to win the third womens round and is clealy leeding with the optimum of 2,1 points. For the places 2-4 there is close racing between Marion Raisi (FRA, Exocet), Zara Davis (GBR) and Nicoletta Margoni (GRE, F2). All three are very close together in points and the first discard of tomorrows 4th round can change everything.

Racing continues tomorrow with the second half of round three and hopefully a complete fourth round to allow for the first discard. The forecast is promising good conditions for the morning with dropping wind during the day.

Karpathos 2006 - Day 3

Not enough wind today for racing, only half an hour allowed for some training runs. We hope that the wind will be strong enough tomorrow to finish the third round with the gold fleet race. The wind is then forecasted to come back strong again beginning of next week.
The results until now can be found in the events section, pictures are available in the press lounge.
We apologize for not being able to update the Livecast during the race as there is no internet connection available directly on the event site, but keep you posted as soon as possible after the races.

Karpathos 2006 - Day 4

No racing today. It was a warm and relaxed day on the beach for all competitors and visitors. The forecast for the next days is looking a little bit better now, and probably tomorrow is a chance to see some racing action again.

Karpathos 2006 - Day 5

The wind was again not strong enough for official racing, but a fun slalom race was run in the afternoon to excite the crowds. Cedric Burel was able to win all three races clearly. The forecast tomorrow is way better and the skippersmeeting set to 9:00 hours.

Karpathos 2006 - Day 6

The wind allowed only for the gold fleet race today, which was won by Finian Maynard in front of Cyril Moussilmani. Bjorn became third which puts some pressure on him now, because Finian is still in touch if we are able to get another race in tomorrow which would allow for the first discard.
Skippersmeeting is scheduled for 9:00 with the first possible start at 9:30 hours.

Karpathos 2006 - Day 7

Again no wind today, even not enough for funsailing. But a big storm is moving towards us with windspeeds of up to 110 km/h and we expect the first winds to arrive here in the afternoon tomorrow latest. If it is blowing we are going to push two other rounds for each fleet, with the latest possible start at 16:00 this should be possible if the wind starts early. This would be a perfect completion of this event, before we go for the price giving which will be held directly at the beach.

Thursday, August 31

Racing is over.

The winds did not come in time. This means that the results are final. With this result the Karpathos 2006 Speedsurfing Grand prix ends.

The storm warning for this afternoon is stil valid and we have dicided to organise a fun race when the winds come. There wil be timing but the runs will not count for the championship. This way will give the audiance a nice show.

For tomorrow morning winds in access of 45 knots are predicted and a morning (foto) and fun session is planed. Some of the pro's will test the potentials of this spot... we will keep you updated.

Karpathos 2006 - Final Day

Unfortunately the wind did not kick in during the day, although we had a hurricane warning from morning on. So Bjorn Dunkerbeck (AND, T1, North) and Karin Jaggi (SUI, F2, North) are the winners of the 2006 Karpathos Speedsurfing Grand Prix. A detailed report will follow tomorrow.

ISA Speedsurfing Grand Prix Karpathos 2006 - Final Results

Bjorn Dunkerbeck (AND, T1, North) and Karin Jaggi (SUI, F2, North) are the winners of the Karpathos ISA Speedsurfing Grand Prix 2006. Bjorn Dunkerbeck was also able to clock the fastest speed of this years season so far with 40.01 knots. Second and third in the mens fleet became Finian Maynard (BVI, F2) and Patrik Diethelm (ITA, f2, North), who also won the production division of the event. In the womens fleet it was close in the end between Zara Davis (GBR, T1) and Marion Raisi (FRA, Exocet) but in the end Marion was a little bit ahead.
The price giving was held directly after the end of the event on the beach of Devils Bay, accompanied by a free barbeque for competitors and visitors.

Unfortunately Karpathos was not able to show its full potential windwise, as only three rounds for silver and gold fleet were completed. But the visitors and competitors got a taste of what it can be in the days before the event and directly after the event, with windspeeds constantly above force eight.
But everyone was impressed by the perfect local organization, the friendliness of the people and the great Greek food.

After two events Finian Maynard is still leading the mens competition, but is has become closer now to the second ranked Bjorn Dunkerbeck. The final will be held in Namibia in the month of October, and all of the big guys have to give their very best to snatch the 2006 world championship title.

ISA Tour Ranking

Finian is still on top before Bjorn and Patrik. Second and third place have same points but Bjorn was able to score a better speed in Karpathos than Patrik. The showdown will take place in Namibia, when all the best speedsailors in the world battle for the remaining points to get the world championship title.
In the womens fleet, Karin Jaggi is clearly ahead of Marion and Zara. Valerie lost important points in the last event because she missed the first racing days.
