Colgate World Cup Sylt Event Preview

As the final competition of the 2009 PWA World Tour draws ever closer, the pressure rises amongst the sailors, and Sylt’s iconic Westerland beach gears up for what promises to be a dramatic conclusion to the season.

>From September 25th through to October 4th the Worlds best wave sailors, freestylers, and slalom sailors will battle it out for their final end of year rankings, and a share of the €105,000 prize purse at the prestigious German windsurfing location on Brandenburger Strand. Not only will they be earning points, but the wave sailors and freestylers will also be gunning for the most coveted prize of all, the PWA World Championship titles!
Sylt has played host to the World Tour for more than 25 years now, so a win here will mean the rider gets their name inscribed in the history books along side windsurfing legends such as Bjorn Dunkerbeck (Starboard, Severne), Robby Naish (Naish), and Jutta Muller.

Men’s Slalom
For the third year in a row, the slalom-racing superstar Antoine Albeau (JP, NeilPryde) has taken the World Title with an event to spare. Albeau has performed outstandingly throughout the year taking 5 victories back to back from Ulsan to Alaçati. However, rest assured he’s still going to make the journey to Sylt and compete nonetheless to affirm his dominance. The rest of the podium is left relatively open with Finian Maynard (RRD, NeilPryde), Kevin Pritchard (Starboard, Gaastra, DaKine), Micah Buzianis (JP, NeilPryde), Bjorn Dunkerbeck (Starboard, Severne) and Ross Williams (Tabou, Gaastra) all capable of standing tall next to Antoine in the overall rankings, but also more than capable of taking the event win if everything goes their way. With this in mind, be sure to follow the action live. Even though Albeau has the overall title, it doesn’t mean he’s got the final event in the bag!

Men’s Freestyle
The freestyle tour also reaches its conclusion in Sylt, and the main players will all be on the water busting out their best tricks in an effort to claim event victory and the overall title. Last years PWA Freestyle World Champion Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic, North) has been the most consistent sailor so far this year, claiming event victories at both of the previous stops of the tour in Lanzarote and Fuerteventura. Although he currently leads the rankings, it doesn’t mean that he’s claimed the overall title for a second year running just yet. Hot on his heels – and all on equal points behind Estredo – are, the youngster from Bonaire Kiri Thode (Starboard, Gaastra), fluid freestyler Everon ‘Tonky’ Frans (F2, Gaastra), and 2007 PWA Freestyle World Champion Marcilio ‘Brawzinho’ Browne (Fanatic, North, MFC). This is set to be a showdown not to be missed, expect powerful moves and mind-blowing action.

Women’s Waves
Leading the charge right now for the women is the Spanish wave sailing legend, and many times World Champion, Daida Ruano Moreno (North) from Gran Canaria. Having won the first event of the tour at her home spot in Pozo, she now has to prove her worth in the unpredictable conditions of the North Sea. She managed to lay to rest any demons that she might have had for Sylt last year by finishing joint first with her twin sister Iballa Ruano Moreno (North). Daida will surely be the one to watch if the conditions turn nuclear. Iballa is currently lying just behind Daida in second place in the overall rankings for the year, and the fearless Karin Jaggi (F2, Severne) is close behind in third with a wealth of competition experience to boot. Also in contention for the event and the overall title is 2007 Sylt Women’s Wave Champion Nayra Alonso (Fanatic, Severne). She has the ability to adapt to all manner of conditions and has the mental advantage that she knows she can be victorious here as she has been in the past. A win for any of these women could see them topping the overall rankings.

Men’s Waves
With no event discards this year for the men’s wave title, we will see the most consistent competitors rise to the top of the crop. Josh Angulo (Angulo, MauiSails, Da Kine) currently has his head above the rest, but not by much. His victory at his home spot of Cabo Verde, and his joint ninth place in the dizzy jumping heights of Pozo place him well for the season, but he must perform here in Sylt if he wishes to take home the ultimate prize in windsurfing. The points are so close in the men’s wave rankings that literally anything could happen. 2008 PWA Wave World Champion Kauli Seadi (JP, NeilPryde, Mormaii, MFC) will be hoping to do well in order to make it three in a row, and his current position bodes well for it. Other contenders include French feather weight Thomas Traversa (Tabou, Gaastra), former freestyle world champion Ricardo Campello (JP, NeilPryde, MFC), British wave sailing legend Robby Swift (JP, NeilPryde), plus many more – almost any of the current top 15 could take the title if things went their way! Victor Fernandez (Fanatic, North, MFC) took the top spot here in Sylt last year, and if he manages to do the same again, he could also take the overall. When the right conditions arrive here in Sylt, we will be sure to see the true all rounder crowned as 2009 PWA Wave World Champion.

Super Sylt
The weather in this part of the North Sea can be anything from absolutely brutal with huge shore break and rough seas to flat calm freestyle heaven, making it an event not to be missed. With so many disciplines competing in the same place, there’s bound to be some sort of action on the water everyday. And remember, no competitors are guaranteed the win – Sylt is a true test of all round abilities.
Expect to see huge crowds arriving at the event site over the next day or so, in 2008 over 190,000 people turned up to watch the action unfold right in front of their very eyes. You too could be a part of it, so if you get the chance, book that flight, ferry, train, or helicopter and feast your eyes on the September spectacular here in Sylt.

The 2009 PWA Colgate World Cup, Sylt – Registration Day

The World’s most talented windsurfers descended on Sylt’s golden sands to sign up for 9 solid days of Super Grand Slam action in the final event of this year’s World Tour.

For many of the sailors today was a fairly relaxed affair. After collecting their equipment and registering, the majority spent the afternoon rigging, and meeting up with friends. The atmosphere around the beach is fairly friendly at present, but once these guys hit the water, expect a completely different vibe. With World Championship titles at stake, attitudes on the water can change as quickly as the wind.

With a promising forecast for the week we should see some awesome action on the water throughout the disciplines of freestyle, wave, and slalom. And with the infamous crowds arriving the atmosphere will soon turn electric!

Word on the beach

Over the course of the afternoon we chatted to some of the sailors, officials, and crew to find out what they thought of the week ahead.

Duncan Coombs – Head Judge
PWA: With your wealth of experience Duncan, what do you think the week has in store for us?
DC: “With the forecast that is currently being predicted, we’re looking at the wave competition being pretty much bolt onshore and fairly windy. The guys racing in the slalom discipline will be flying round in typically rough North Sea conditions. And the guys participating in the freestyle contest will probably be going for big power moves off the large swell lines just off the beach. It will be a real challenge for these guys to find any flat water with the current forecast. However, you have to remember that anything can happen here in Sylt and it could all change in an instant…”

Current Men’s Wave Tour Leader - Josh Angulo (Angulo, MauiSails, DaKine)
PWA: What are you hoping for this week Josh?
JA: “Knowing what Sylt is capable of, I’m not really hoping for anything. I’ll try my best, do my best, and let god do the rest. Sylt can throw anything at you so I’ll just give it my all when the moment comes.”

PWA: What do you think will happen this week in the wave competition?
KS: “Well the forecast is looking good so hopefully we’ll get out there and have a good contest. I really need the conditions to come through so that I have a chance for the overall title.”

2009 PWA Slalom World Champion – Antoine Albeau (JP, NeilPryde)
PWA: With the overall title wrapped up, are you taking this event easy? And, who do you think will be standing on the podium alongside you?
AA: “I’m still going to give every race 100% - I still want to win here in Sylt. In the race for second, I think Finian Maynard (RRD, NeilPryde) is looking pretty good. After that, the final place on the overall podium looks quite open. Kevin Pritchard (Starboard, Gaastra, DaKine), Micah Buzianis (JP, NeilPryde), Bjorn Dunkerbeck (Starboard, Severne), and Ross Williams (Tabou, Gaastra) could all make it into the top 3 and have the potential to do extremely well in this event if things go their way.”

2008 PWA Women’s Wave Champion – Daida Moreno (North)
PWA: What conditions would you like here in Sylt?
DM: “Nothing too brutal. It’s often very difficult sailing here because of the onshore winds and the shore break, so hopefully it won’t get too windy. But good waves and good wind would be great for the event - I don’t mind too much about the direction it comes from.”

Current Men’s freestyle tour leader – Jose ‘Gollito’ Estredo (Fanatic, North)
PWA: Have you got any new moves up your sleeve to maintain your dominance over the fleet this week?
JE: “Not for this event. Sylt in general is a pretty tough place to compete in freestyle. I will probably be sticking to the moves I know I can do, and hope that they get me through my heats. Plus there’s loads of guys sailing really well at the moment like Kiri Thode (Starboard, Gaastra), Tonky Frans (F2, Gaastra), Marcilio Browne (North, Fanatic, MFC), and also Steven Van Broekhoven (F2, MauiSails), he’s sailing super well at the moment and is one to watch.”

The infamous opening ceremony kick started the event in tremendous style this afternoon. The World’s best sailors are here, the spectators are arriving, and the music is pumping on the beach. With the current forecast we expect the sailors to be arriving at the event site bright and early tomorrow morning in preparation for the opening heats of this Colgate World Cup Sylt.

Light winds prevent any competition from taking place on day one, but everyone remains hopeful due to the current forecast.

The race committee put every effort into getting the competitors off the beach and in front of the huge crowds, with the course set from the word go. Unfortunately the promising early morning breeze failed to materialize into anything strong enough for wave, freestyle or even slalom competition today.

Many of the competitors spent their time glued to the forecast for the week ahead, and awaiting further information at the event site. Most of the slalom sailors were seen preparing for the forthcoming races, fine-tuning their equipment whilst on standby.

During this period we took the opportunity to talk to Finian Maynard (RRD, NeilPryde), former World Speed Record holder, and currently ranked second in the World Tour for slalom, about his thoughts on the week ahead, the speed record, and his plans for 2010.

PWA: How confident are you about holding on to your second place overall for the season?

FM: “I’m fairly confident because I think the other guys just behind me will be battling more for third place rather than trying to overtake me. There is a little bit of gap behind me because my worst result this year is a 6th, so no matter what happens I can count that here. The other guys would have to win the contest, so I feel I can relax a little bit.”

PWA: What sort of conditions do you think the racers will experience this week?

FM: “I expect we’ll be racing in the lighter winds this week because with all three disciplines involved, the organizers will be trying to get the freestyle and wave competitions underway when the wind is up. It’s very tricky with everyone here, but we’ve had great conditions for slalom this season so we can’t really complain. The forecast looks good for the week though with a few low pressures on their way so maybe it’ll be different – we’ll see.

PWA: What are your plans for next year?

FM: “I’m going to really focus on the slalom. Antoine has worked hard in this discipline over the past few years and it’s paid off for him. I’d like to try and do the same and push for the title next year.”

PWA: And what about speed? Now that the Hydoptere has the World Speed Record are you tempted to charge back into that at full throttle and bring it home for the windsurfers?

FM: “It’s a thought, but it would be really tough going for both the Slalom World title and the Speed record at the same time. I would be splitting my resources and my energy, which would basically mean I’m not giving either of them 100%, and so it’s probably not the way to go about it. I feel that slalom is the way for me to go at the moment, and it’s the direction my sponsors are happy to support me in. Having said that, there are rumors of the canal opening back up, but it’s not in the best shape at the moment. It would take a lot of work to bring it back to a record breaking standard. Add to that the fact that the record now stands at 51.36 kts, and we’d need some near perfect conditions on the canal to break it.”

PWA: Obviously the windsurfing world would love to see the record back in their hands. Do you think the kites and now the Hydroptere have any advantages over the windsurfers?

FM: “Unfortunately we have a bit of handicap because of the depth of water needed for our fins which really limits us in terms of possible locations. The kites can run in 10cm of water, which is far too shallow for us. They also have the advantage that when they crash, the kite pulls them up, whereas we get pushed down into the water. If we practiced in water as shallow as possible it would be far more dangerous, we’d end up with broken equipment, or worse with broken bones. It’s not over for the windsurfers though, I firmly believe that we have the most advanced technology, especially with our rigs - no one else has dynamic flex rigs like we do. If a big sponsor is willing to give us some backing then I’m sure the interest will be there and we’ll get behind it.”

The slalom sailors were tantalizingly close to starting their first heats today, but with variable winds plaguing the event site, they have been forced to wait for another day.

The light early morning breeze gave the wave and freestyle sailors another chance to relax, and mentally prepare for the competition ahead. For the slalom sailors however, it was a different story. A four gybe downwind course was set early in the morning, and the racers were rigged and ready to do battle by 10:00.

Unfortunately, with the light and unpredictable winds, the slalom sailors were held on standby for much of the day. The occasional gust tempted a few of the competitors out including Ross Williams (Tabou, Gaastra), Finian Maynard (RRD, NeilPryde), Bjorn Dunkerbeck (Starboard, Severne) and Robby Swift (JP, NeilPryde). But it was extremely patchy and even with their 9.3’s up they occasionally dropped off the plane. During the afternoon, the sun shone on Sylt’s golden sands but the wind didn’t play ball.

Race director Juan Antonio Aragon made every effort to get the racing underway today, but the wind was far too gusty to hold any heats.

Whilst the sailors were on standby, we took the opportunity to speak to one of the newest and youngest competitors on the tour. Mikey Clancy (Starboard, Severne) has shown great promise over in his homeland of Ireland recently, and this year joined the PWA Wave Tour in Pozo. And competing against the World’s best obviously didn’t put him off because he’s come back for more in Sylt.

PWA: How did you find your first professional level event in Gran Canaria? Was it nerve wracking sailing against your idols?
MC: “My first heat was against a really big name, Peter Volwater (F2, MauiSails), and so it was pretty tough. I’d seen these guys in the videos all my life and then suddenly I had to compete against one of them in my first heat! Even just looking at my name on the contest list next to guys like Kauli Seadi (JP, NeilPryde, Mormaii, MFC), and Josh Angulo (Angulo, MauiSails, Dakine), was pretty scary! Normally I’m not too nervous a person, but when it suddenly came to my heat and I had to choose my equipment and think about the moves I was going to do – I was a bit overwhelmed by it all. However, when it came to my second heat and I’d spoken to a few of the other guys, I was a much more relaxed.”

PWA: What’s it like being one of the youngest on the tour?
MC: “Well, at 19 years old I’m in reasonably good company with the likes of Marcilio Browne (Fanatic, North, MFC) and Kai Lenny (Naish, Naish) being of a similar age. There’s also Thomas Traversa (Tabou, Gaastra) and Alex Mussolini (Tabou) who both ride with amazing style and aren’t that old. There’s quite a few younger people coming through, so it makes it a little easier for me, although most of these guys have been on the tour for a while now. It’s great to see them on the water and get tips from them so that I can improve my own riding. In Ireland I normally sail on my own so being able to sail with everyone is amazing.”

PWA: At the moment are you just enjoying being here with the best windsurfers in the world and soaking in the atmosphere?
MC: “Yeah I’m loving being at these events, the atmosphere here in Sylt is phenomenal. The tents stretch down the beach for about 1km, there are masses of spectators – even I feel like a star when people gather round to watch me rig my gear!”

PWA: Where do you hope to finish in this event?
MC: “Hopefully I’d like to improve upon my result which I obtained in Pozo. I came 25th there, but it’s going to be pretty tough to beat that here. I’m not used to the onshore conditions, and there are other guys here that weren’t in Pozo like Nik Baker (Fanatic, Mistral) and Jason Polakow (JP, NeilPryde). It’s not a big deal because this is just my first time in Sylt and my first year on the tour - I’ve got plenty of years left in me! This winter I’m going to try and improve my own sailing standard and my fitness, so I’m more prepared for the tour next year.”

PWA: Who do you think will win here in Sylt and who do you think will take home the Wave World Title?
MC: “I’m not really sure, there are so many big names, and it depends if the wind swings round to starboard tack. If that happens there could be a few guys that you wouldn’t normally have thought able, at the front of the fleet. Overall I think it will probably be Angulo or Seadi, but you can’t ever rule out Ricardo Campello (JP, NeilPryde, MFC), or Traversa, or Robby Swift (JP, NeilPryde), they’re all within reach.

Thanks to Mikey for taking time out to speak with us. We look forward to seeing more of him on the tour next year. It really is great to see these new faces around giving it their best shot against the older and more experienced sailors. Perhaps we’ll see some of them rise to the top before the week is out.

Die Veranstalter um Matthias Neumann machen einen verdammt guten Job und pushen den Event nicht nur jetzt, sondern das ganze Jahr...
Ich war letztes Jahr im Januar und im Herbst zu Gesprächen über den Worldcup mit Dunki in Düsseldorf dabei, das war schon interessant. Vor Allem, wenn man mal Zahlen hört...
Früher waren auch Robby und Dunki im aktuellen Sport Studio, weitere Teilnehmer des Sylt Worldcups ebenso...
Ich meine Kai Lenny war mit Robby letztes oder vorletztes Jahr...
