Press Release
Walvis Bay, 01.09.2007
Walvis Bay, Namibia is hosting the speed windsurfing world cup finals for the third time in a row, starting from the 2nd of September and delivering adrenaline-packed, thrilling action until the 9th of September.
For the cr?me de la cr?me of speed windsurfing, now the battle is on for the world championship titles and new records.
In the men?s fleet, all eyes are set to the reigning world champion and 500m world record holder Finian Maynard (F2) from the British Virgin Islands, who clearly dominated last years season. The only sailor who was able to defeat him this year is French Antoine Albeau, but only a few points ahead of him after the seasons first two events.
Also very close behind is "Blackman" Jose Bahadour (Fanatic) from Guadeloupe, who dominated in the light winds of Karpathos. Can he also stand the hard conditions in Namibia ?
Ready for the shot to the top are also 36 time world champion Bjorn Dunkerbeck (T1, North), now starting for Switzerland, and Italian Patrik Diethelm (F2, North). Both are always good for some first places at their favourite spot.
In the ladies fleet, Valerie Ghibaudo (FRA, Loft Sails) is only a few points ahead of Karian Jaggi (SUI, F2, North). Zara Davis has a safe third place, but after breaking the nautical mile world record here in Walvis Bay last year she knows the place very well and will attack for the event title.
It is very clear, that who ever will be the next world speedsurfing champion has to win this event and keep his opponents on distance !
The ISA Speedsurfing Grand Prix is sanctioned by ISWC (International Speed Windsurfing Class) on behalf of ISAF (International Sailing Federation). The organization will be done by the Free Air Sports Centre in cooperation with the International Speedsurfing Association.
During and after the competition, we will have available for all national and international media, press releases, video packages with broadcasting quality images and high resolution pictures.
You can also follow the daily action through our live ticker on the website www.speedsurfing.org (http://www.speedsurfing.org/)
For further details please contact isa@speedsurfing.org (isa@speedsurfing.org)
ISWC Background
The International Speed Windsurfing Class is the successor to the International Speedsurfing Association, which was administering the discipline of speed windsurfing in the last three years on behalf of IFCA.
Effective May 2007, the ISWC has become an ISAF international class, and thus is entitled to control all aspects of the sport and award the official world champion titles in the discipline of speed windsurfing.
The ISWC is a riders association, which means that the riders itself control the development of the sport. Beside the organizing people behind the scene, the executive committee is thus completed with the riders elected representatives. Its current and past members are the ?cr?me de la cr?me? of Speedsurfing worldwide.
Elected chairman of the board is Peter Davis from Great Britain, enthusiastic rider and organizer of the famous Weymouth Speedweek. Executive Secretary Markus Schwendtner from Germany already controlled the speed discipline business as ISA Tour Manager, and will continue this successful task for the ISWC now.
The ISWC events go from exceptional action in Namibia to more cosmopolitan spots such as Fuerteventura - the historical European Speedsurfing Capital, to huge shows of extreme conditions on small islands like Karpathos. In all, there are 200 to 300 members of the association at the same time, from places like Australia or Brasil, to Germany or Norway.
The Tour has to offer: dynamic, thrilling action, and bring the most visually dynamic aquatic sports to the audience, making it a perfect vehicle to locate sponsors logos; a sport that is set outdoors, healthy and environmental friendly.
Superb action on the water, combined with an interactive and exciting life experience, that creates an atmosphere where the fans and the media are face to face with the most radical and intense competition and the biggest personalities of the sport.
Besides being a sport of radical action, Windsurfing is a way of life. This type of life is formed by several elements to which many aspire, but that few can really achieve. Most of, if not all of these aspects of the sport are represented in the Speedsurfing Grand Prix Tour.
The ISWC is entitled to hold World, Continental and National Championships and is always looking for partners, local organizers as well as national associations, to propagate this exciting and thrilling discipline all over the world.

Press Release
Walvis Bay, 03.09.2007
We awoke to a thick heavy fog this morning, and as the locals say: ?if the fog is too thick and does not clear quickly in the morning, then the wind won?t be strong.? Well today they were certainly correct.
As we made the trip across to the speedstrip the damp air and mist made it feel a bit like we were in an English winter. But in true Walvis Bay style, at around 2pm, the mist cleared and a gentle SW breeze started to waft over the sandbar. The wind was exceptionally cold and it had a nasty bite which went right through any clothing you had on. I felt a bit sorry for the poor Red Bull girls, but then again we really needed them so, thanks girls!
The wind continued building very slowly throughout the afternoon and in the end at 4:30 the green flag went up and it was go go go? The wind had reached the minimum 20 knots average. The riders took to the water in a flurry of colour and made the best of the light wind conditions. The heat was a blessing for the lighter sailors who could use the less windy conditions to gain some rankings on the heavier sailors.
Finian Maynard (BVI, F2) set the best time of the day with an amazing 35.17 knots. For a big strong guy, the world record holder sure knows how to make the best of the lighter conditions. Second became his strongest opponent, Antoine Albeau (FRA) ahead of Bjorn Dunkerbeck (SUI, T1, North). In the ladies fleet, Valerie Ghibaudo (FRA, Loft Sails) shot the bullet ahead of Maaike Kallenborn (NED), Karin Jaggi (SUI, F2, North) finished only third.
The forecast looks for more wind in the upcoming days, so for the riders that need a discard after todays racing it still looks promising.

Die News von gestern...
Press Release
Walvis Bay, 04.09.2007
We once again awoke to thick cold mist this morning but it cleared a lot quicker than yesterday. By noon it had already lifted for the most part and a SW breeze began to awaken the senses. The beach at the speedstrip was once again a hive of activity as riders rigged all sail sizes from 5m? right up to7.8m? in anticipation for the varying conditions which Walvis Bay tends to deliver.
The wind jacked up much better than yesterday and the heat was started at 3:30. The first 15 minutes was complete pandemonium at the start as the large fleet of participants, eager to get some runs on the scoreboard, converged on the speedstrip. Windsurfing legend Bjorn Dunkerbeck (SUI, T1, North) was on top form today and Blasted his way into top position early on in the heat with a 41 knot run, and fended off violent attacks from Patrick Diethelm (ITA, F2, North), Antoine Albeau (FRA) and Finian Maynard (BVI, F2). Just when the top guys thought the local riders were not a threat Namibian Matthias Roettcher (F2, North) blasted through a series of super fast runs in the 39.3 knots range, only 0.02 knots slower than the current leader of the World Speed tour, Antoine Albeau, and made it clear that the locals are there! Karin Jaggi (SUI, F2, North) was the fastest lady of the day who managed to stay ahead of Valerie Ghibaudo (FRA, Loft Sails) by only 0.04 knots !
There was really great action on the speedstrip today. We had a few broken masts and booms as usual. Australian speed demon Chris Lockwood hit a lost kiteboard full on which took a huge bite out of his fin and gashed the bottom of his board. I won?t mention here the words which were uttered? but in true sportsman style he just took another board and fin and headed straight back out.
The wind forecasts show even more wind tomorrow so we hope we awake to clear skies and strong winds?

Press Release
Walvis Bay, 05.09.2007
Record count: 4 !
Bright blazing African sun woke all the riders this morning and that brought about a joyous mood at the skippers meeting as we all knew that today the wind was going to PUMP! And so it did. At 11:30 social kiters were out in the lagoon and at 12:30 they were flying through the streets?
The following records were broken today in Namibia, all records are subject to WSSRC ratification.
Namibian windsurf men: Matthias Roetcher (F2, North) at 40.85 knots Italian windsurf men: Patrik Diethelm (F2, North) at 42.98 knots Croatia windsurf men: Oliver Biljman (T1, North at 38.11 knots Irish windsurf men: Steve Flanagan (North) at 36.10 knots
The wind jacked very suddenly but the angle was very square so the course was not at the optimum downwind angle but at least there was enough power to push the competitors to some great speeds. The first heat was started at 1pm, with about 25 knots average wind, and the action was underway. Bjorn Dunkerbeck (SUI, T1, North) dominated the first heat with consistent runs in the 42 knots range. He also managed the best speed of the day with a 43.13 knot run. We all watched in amazement as he seemed to be riding way too close and shallow for a normal windsurf fin? He was even closer to the shore than some of the kitesurfers, later we saw that he had cut his fins shorter; will the tossup between smoother flatter water and a more inefficient fin play into his advantage? Only time will tell! It sure worked in heat 1. Locals Hennie Bredenkamp (RSA, Fanatic) and Matthias Roettcher (NAM, F2, North) came in at 7th and 8th respectively showing that the locals have what it takes.
For heat two the wind average had shifted to 30 knots with the gusts hitting 37 knots. Patrick Diethelm (ITA, F2, North) dominated the second heat with a best speed of 42.98 knots.
It was a great day on the water and with 2 heats and extensions the guys were sailing for nearly 4 hours. The wind looks like it will be here in full force tomorrow again so we are all off to the Speedweek party tent for a well deserved beer and a rest?ha

Once again the riders woke up to a morning of blue skies and loads of wind. The morning got off to a sluggish start as most riders felt the after effects of yesterdays gruelling two heats and the celebrations which followed the announcement of the 4 national records which were broken.
The first heat of the day was underway by 13:45 in 20 ? 25 knots of wind. Bjorn Dunkerbeck (SUI, T1, North), Patrick Diethelm (ITA, F2, North) and Finian Maynard (BVI, F2) dominated this round with consistent 41 knots runs. Local riders Hennie Bredenkamp (RSA, Fanatic), Matthias Roettcher (NAM, F2, North), Darren Barker (RSA) and Frank Stein (NAM, F2, North) were all up there in the top 20 making the locals proud. Valerie Ghibaudo (FRA, Loft Sails) dominated the ladies race and finished 2 knots faster than Karin Jaggi (SUI, F2, North).
In heat 2 the wind picked up to 30 knots and Bjorn Dunkerbeck just managed to keep ahead of current world tour leader Antoine Albeau (FRA). Patrik Diethelm set the fastest speed of the day with a 43.02 knots run. African Record holder Hennie Bredenkamp came in at 5th position with a staggering 41.46 knots run.
Patrik Diethelm and Steve Flanagan (IRL, North) both managed to better their records from yesterday, while Philip Adamidis (GRE, Fanatic) and Dave MacInnes (NZL) set new national records for their countries.
The forecast shows for slightly less wind tomorrow but with a better angle we are hoping for some good speeds and of course another action packed day of racing on the Walvis Bay jellyfish infested speedstrip!

Five records tumble.
After another day of racing the magical conditions at the Walvis Bay speedstrip made it
possible for another five records to be broken.
Sjoukje Bredenkamp equalled her existing world record and Patrick van Hoof also
equalled the Belgium national record. Hard luck guys, we hop you can go that bit faster in
the next two days to break the barriers.
All records are subject to WSSRC ratification.
The new records are:
Irish windsurf men – Steve Flanagan – 37.114 knots
Dutch kitesurf men – Rolf van der Vlugt – 39.253 knots
Italian windsurf men – Patrick Diethelm – 43.053 kmots
Greek windsurf men – Philip Adamidis – 40.816 knots
New Zealand windsurf men – David Macinnes – 40.645 knots

Press Release
Walvis Bay, 07.09.2007
And another day of wind it was. Once again the magical Walvis Bay speedstrip provided perfect conditions for another great day of sailing.
Bjorn Dunkerbeck (SUI, T1, North) dominated the Walvis Bay speedstrip setting the best speed of the day with a 41.98 knots run. Antoine Albeau (FRA) and Finian Maynard (BVI, F2) followed closely behind. Local South African hero Hennie Bredenkamp (Fanatic) had an unbelievable day and finished in fourth position. He was on top form and sailed a flawless heat. Perhaps having the support of his father, who came to watch for the day, gave him that extra boost. In the ladies race it was once again Valerie Ghibaudo (FRA, Loft Sails) who dominated.
In the Overall ranking, Bjorn is clear ahead with a perfect score of 3.5 points after seven races and two discards. Second is Antoine, which brings him into the world leadership at the moment, and Patrik Diethelm (ITA, F2, North) is third, but only 0.7 points behind. Another race tomorrow can bring him into second, if he can manage to beat Antoine. Finian Maynard is fourth now, and it doesn't look like there is enough time left to strike back.
Valerie Ghibaudo is also in first position with a perfect score of 3.5 points, and straight on the way to her first world title. Karin Jaggi secures a safe second place, Maaike Kallenborn (NED) is in third now after Zara Davis (GBR) had to stop racing after injuring herself in a bad crash yesterday.
Tomorrow is the last official day of racing in the 500 meter category before we move on to the Nautical mile event. So tomorrow the world champions will be decided and announced at the prize giving in the evening.

Press Release
Walvis Bay, 09.09.2007
Antoine Albeau, Valerie Ghibaudo, Patrik Diethelm and Karin Jaggi are the new Speed Windsurfing World Champions 2007.
The Overall Title for both men and women was decided by the last races of the last event in 2007. In the mens fleet, four riders had the chance to catch the 2007 title. Best positioned were Antoine Albeau (FRA), first in the ISA ranking after the Fuerteventura event, and Finian Maynard (BVI, F2). If Finian could beat Antoine in Walvis Bay, he would be able to defend his world title. Third ranked Jose Bahadour (GOU, Fanatic) was not able to compete in Namibia, as he couldn't get a flight out from Gouadeloupe due to an upcoming hurricane, so he was already out of the race. Patrik Diethelm (ITA, F2, North) and Bjorn Dunkerbeck (SUI, Thommen, North) also had some chances to go up higher in the ranking.
From the first day of the surf & action Walvis Bay Speedweek, Bjorn Dunkerbeck and Antoine Albeau dominated the seven races. After two discards, Bjorn ended up first with a perfect score of 3.5 points. Antoine came into second with a lot of second places, and Patrik finished third only 0.7 points behind.
Reigning world champion Finian Maynard didn't get the right trim for the Speedstrip on the Walvis Bay sandbar and ended up fourth. For the world overall ranking Bjorn jumped up to vice world champion, and Antoine Albeau got his first speed world championship crown. Finian ended up third after the 2007 season.
In the womens fleet, Valerie Ghibaudo (FRA, Loft Sails) was head to head with Karin Jaggi (SUI, F2, North) after the first two events in Karpathos and Fuerteventura. Valerie won all but one races with an impressive topspeed of 37.47 knots and clearly claimed the world title. Karin Jaggi into second, and Zara Davis (GBR), which injured herself in a bad crash in leg 4, ended up third.
In the production category, the world titles went to Patrik Diethelm and Karin Jaggi. In second Greek Philip Adamidis (Fanatic) and Zara Davis, third places to Thorsten Luig (GER, F2/Thommen, North) and Maaike Kallenborn (NED).
The Manufacturers ranking are won by F2 and North, the Nations ranking goes clearly to France.
In total, more than 120 competitors from 25 nations, representing 5 continents, took part so far in the ISA Speedsurfing Grand Prix Tour 2007, and some more events are coming up in the next month, as famous Weymouth Speedweek, the Austrian, German, Dutch and Belgium championships, which all count towards the final world ranking.

hi, all
Just to let you know we had a great week in Namibia, strong wind 25 to 40 knots all week
80 competitors, 7 heats of 90 minutes in 6 days, which 5 were won by me
and also 43.13 knots "almost 80 km/h" was the fastest speed over 500 meters, which is the fastest speed done in an ISA speed contest since it started 3 years ago
